Ubisoft brings us another military-themed First Person Shooter, Haze, which there obviously aren\'t nearly enoug of these days... But Haze feels a bit different, too. Charged with some serious political satire, Haze gets you all tied up with Mantel Global\'s corporate mercenaries in the ongoing war for democracy. If the slow pacing of FPS titles like Half-Life 2 and Doom 3 put you off, UberSoldier might be able to offer a more mindless and action oriented experience at a budget price. Some players will think it\'s a wonderful excursion from the tedious, and some players will quite reasonably hate it. For the former group, this zombie-filled WWII shooter is worth the $29 that you\'ll put down at your local video game store. It embodies old-school first person shooting, executing the genre tried-and-true without all that complicated crap like an interesting plot.

Activision\'s Call of Duty series has been a big hit, so it\'s only natural that fans are excited about Call of Duty 2: The Big Red One. Exploring the campaigns of Russia, Central Europe and North Africa, Call of Duty 2 offers a cinematic FPS experience that is intense and gritty. Smoke and dirt and explosive action makes the visuals as beautiful as they are terrifying. Vietcong 2 puts gamers into the Vietnam War and allows them to play either American or Vietcong forces. Solid gameplay and nice production values make Vietcong a decent title, but a completely stock story and some boneheaded AI prevent it from standing out. Bioware and Microsoft have teamed up once again for another Xbox 360 exclusive title: Mass Effect. Mass Effect is a sci-fi action RPG in which you play the first human Specter -- an elite soldier sworn to defend the galaxy. As one might expect, a rogue agent begins stirring up trouble for the peaceful denizens of the galaxy, and it\'s up to you and your elite team of defenders to solve the problem. And as any Bioware fan might expect, you will eventually discover the truth about a much greater threat to the galaxy. Is it just us or does this sound a lot like SW: KOTOR?

We know a few things about Quake IV: The single-player mode returns and has you fighting among the soldiers fending off the oncoming Strogg onslaught. The game runs on the Doom 3 engine, and it looks amaazing. And by all accounts from this summer\'s QuakeCon 2005, the multiplayer kicks @$$.

Bet On Soldier: Blood Sport takes a high energy FPS starting point and amps it up with some novel approaches to multiplayer gameplay. In BOS, you live and die by your victories, and this war isn\'t waged for peace or freedom; this war is waged for ratings and money. UK gamers will be enjoying Bet On Soldier for PC in a few short weeks, and hopefully we\'ll get to check it out so we can know whether or not to riot in the streets until it comes to the US.

Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix features nicer graphics and a more robust GHOUL system (which allows you to take out your enemies piece by piece), but the gameplay remains oriented around shooting, shooting, and shooting more. It\'s bizarre to see the US Army making such a PR push. First they produced that reality Web series about boot camp. Now they\'ve created a development house, America\'s Army and two games: Operations and Soldiers. One is an FPS built on the new Unreal engine that should give Clancy fans and their ilk a treat.
