Matt\'s back with the first of the 2006 Mailbags, full of international flavor. We\'ve got some feedback about our glowing review of Kutoka\'s Creatures and Creatures Exodus titles from the developers. And of course we\'ve got the requisite letters suffering from \"TLI\"-- Too Little Information. You tell us: How DO you get engineers to build siege machines on the top of large towers? Is it some kind of riddle? Check out the latest reader mail right here.
game: The A-Z of Cool Computer Games
review | 01/15/06 | Shawn Rider
The A-Z of Cool Computer Games is a robust survey of computer games and gaming history centered on the British gaming experience. As such, this book focuses on, mainly, European and British computers, games, consoles and arcade machines that were popular in the UK in the late 20th Century. For folks who fondly remember their old Speccy this is a trip down memory lane. For those of us across the pond, it\'s a peek into a wonderful bizarro-land of gaming: An alternate dimension of interactive entertainment that often intersects with our own gaming heritage.
game: Ministry of Sound StikAx
review | 01/08/06 | Shawn Rider
What does a music and video mixing peripheral have to do with videogames? Not much. But the StikAx sure is fun. The bizarre mixing peripheral feels like an instrument, and the powerful editing software would be a great value even without the actual StikAx. Embrace the media lifestyle convergence and add the StikAx to your list of things to check out in the new year. It might make you the next big WoW machinimaker! Shawn\'s got a complete review here.
game: GelTabz
review | 01/02/06 | Shawn Rider
GelTabz are an unlikely must-have enhancement. They are so incredibly simple they\'ll have you wondering why more game controllers don\'t make use of their innovative design. But they are so effective that once you give them a shot, you won\'t want to play without them. As natural a fit as a baseball glove and a baseball bat, GelTabz are definitely worth a closer look. game: Crash Tag Team Racing
review | 11/17/05 | Matt James
Crash Tag Team Racing comes a year after the old Double-Dash did in the venerable Mario Kart on Gamecube and double-dashed the hopes of many a fan. But don\'t be fooled by the immediate resemblance here: Crash Tag Team Racing might look like a Double-Dash rip-off, but in reality it has much more to offer. Combining a quality Crash platformer with zany, fast-paced racing action, Crash Tag Team Racing is unlike any other game we\'ve played. Still not convinced? OK, then, two words: Ninja Penguins. \'Nuff said. Check Matt\'s review here.
game: Sociolotron
feature | 11/14/05 | Shawn Rider
Last week we published the first part of Shawn\'s in-depth look at the twisted world of Sociolotron. Billed as the ultimate adult MMORPG, Sociolotron features unprecedented levels of player freedom and sexual gameplay. But Shawn found that, much like novels by the Marquis de Sade, the bizarro sex quickly becomes banal and the real meat of the game lies in the ways players build their characters and live out alternative lives within the game. In Part Two of his feature, Shawn talks to senior citizen male prostitutes, lesbian lovers, and a wheelchair-bound mafioso who commands four in-game sex slaves. He also talks to Patrick Lagny, who has created Sociolotron almost single-handedly, about what motivates him to make such a game.
Needless to say, this article features explicit language and frank descriptions of adult and sexual themes. Reader discretion is advised.

1UP.com has a good history of web comics dedicated to videogames. It walks through all the major players, from current videogame comic and freedom-fighting Juggernaut, Penny Arcade, to foundational titles like PvP and 8-Bit Theater. These mighty three have spun off entire genres in a fledgling industry, and many have made their rise side by side with the indy gaming website scene. Of course, there\'s no mention of Twoplayer, which has been recognized by sites like Joystiq as not totally sucking. Nevertheless, it\'s a good read and if any of the comics discussed are not on your webcomic radar, then you are really missing out. Check out the 1UP article here:
Will Strip for Games: Gaming Comics Online
news | 10/22/05 | Shawn Rider
Hideo Kojima has officially joined the blogosphere.
Hideoblog, hosted on Konami\'s Kojima Productions site, is an interesting read. It\'s a classic example of bringing some everyday humanity to a legendary figure, and reading Kojima\'s desc
riptions of checking email while eating lunch and the light reflecting from Tokyo\'s Roppongi Hills brings a real sense of the man behind the Metal Gear Solid franchise. And on some days Kojima is doing things like getting his copy of Hard Boiled autographed by Frank Miller. It\'s a bit surreal, and should be a must-read for any Kojima acolytes. Check it out.
game: WWE Day of Reckoning 2
review | 10/16/05 | Chris Martin
We got Chris Martin\'s skinny butt in the ring with WWE Day of Reckoning 2 for the GameCube, and, oddly enough, he came out with a weird afterglow that made him forget about all the bruises and mat burns. Day of Reckoning 2 is pretty much a \"bigger, better, more\" improvement over its predecessor, and veteran in-the-ring game developer, Yuke\'s Media Creations, really brings it with a game good enough to make non-wrestling fans want to play it. Check out the review here.

In a great analysis of Microsoft\'s latest announcements about Xbox Live Arcade for Xbox 360, Joystiq\'s Vladimir Cole details how Xbox Live Arcade is a growing threat to the traditional retail chain. And that\'s not necessarily a bad thing for game publishers: \"Sure, the games on offer right now are non-threatening casual games, but it's only a matter of time until gamers are downloading entire t
riple-A titles and not just demos of them. With more and more retailers moving towards the sale of used games, first- and third-party publishers are going to push the direct-to-consumer channel even harder.\" Check out

game: GUN
news | 10/06/05 | Shawn Rider
I don\'t even like westerns, but I love Deadwood. The grimy, gritty Old West environment, teetering between nature and civilization, lends itself to some gripping drama and high adventure. Plus, there\'s plenty of cursing. So I get very interested when I hear that Neversoft, one of my fave game developers, has also been watching Deadwood, and has created an entire game based in the Wild West, with the goal of expanding the open-play scenerio beyond cops and robbers. GUN will come out this Fall for Xbox, PS2 and Xbox 360. We\'ve got some XB360 screen here and a bit more about the game.
game: Eye Toy Play 2
review | 09/05/05 | Shawn Rider
Sony\'s Eye Toy is one of the coolest innovations we\'ve seen in gaming controllers. Of course, the original EyeToy Play disc was a bit shallow and remains more of a tech demo. However, EyeToy Play 2 is a really wonderful improvement, offering much deeper gameplay and more enjoyable multiplayer.
