Click to read.In an announcement sure to get gamers everywhere all worked up, Microsoft announced at the X05 Amsterdam expo that Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh (creators of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy and the upcoming King Kong) will be Executive Producers on the upcoming Halo movie. The news also means that Academy Award winning New Zealand effects house, Weta Digital, will also be involved in the movie, which is another great sign. It looks like Halo might just set the bar a little higher for the old game-to-film adaptation, just as it did for the console-based FPS and again for console-based online multiplayer.

It is already well-known that Microsoft and Bungie will have a lot of input into the film, and Fox and Universal saw their role as providing the best Hollywood could offer the project. Certainly the inclusion of Fran Walsh and Peter Jackson, as well as Weta Digital and Weta Workshop, in the film will bring a high level of quality and enthusiasm to the project.

Jackson says of the project: \"I'm a huge fan of the game and look forward to helping it come alive on the cinema screen.\"

Jackson\'s love of games is well-known. After a rocky relationship with Electronic Arts developing the Lord of the Rings games, Jackson sought out Ubi Soft\'s Michel Ancel, developer of Rayman and the critically-acclaimed Beyond Good and Evil, to create a game based on Jackson\'s upcoming film, King Kong.

Halo is one of the most successful gaming franchises of all-time. Halo and Halo 2 have sold a combined 13.8 million copies worldwide. Halo 2 currently holds the \"biggest opening day\" record for any media release with sales of over $125 million in first-day sales.

In addition, it was announced that Alex Garland will write the script for the Halo movie. Garland is probably best known for writing the 28 Days Later screenplay.

A director for the project is yet to be announced.
