review | 07/20/06 | Matt James
Konami\'s latest retro anthology, Gradius Collection, brings a long legacy of side-scrolling shooter mayhem to the PSP. For fans of the classic space-cave action Gradius made popular, this is a must-have collection. Sporting some welcome enhancements, including a quick-save feature that helps players reach previously unattainable levels and makes the games more portable-friendly, Gradius Collection is worth checking out to spice up that summertime commute. Matt James has the review right here.

SteelSeries 5L Review: It Will Cost You in Gold
game: SteelPad 5L
review | 07/16/06 | Tristan Mayshark
SteelSeries has a line of high-end peripherals that includes the \"5L Steel\" mousepad, an extra large 15x11 inch mousepad designed to give you the edge in PC gaming. Despite being durable and perfectly suited for what it\'s designed to do, the SteelPad suffers from the same symptom that afflicts most high-end specialized gaming gear: It\'s a top notch mousepad, but costs twice what it should.

Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel Review
game: Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel
review | 07/10/06 | Laurie Taylor
The graphic novel has earned itself a standing as an independent art form over the years, and is now moving into the digital realm. Following in the footsteps of the Silent Hill Experience, Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel comes to the PSP under the banner of a new medium. Except, instead of just telling a good story in classic graphic novel form, the developers felt obligated to include uninteresting and tedious gameplay elements into the presentation. The result is promising, but less than perfect. Graphic novel fans should be excited about the potential, but for now the rich promise of digital graphic novels on the PSP remains unrealized.

Sounds Good, Good Sounds: Turtle Beach Ear Force X2 Review
game: Ear Force X2
review | 06/29/06 | Shawn Rider
Turtle Beach brings their Xbox-targeted headphones to a whole new level of quality with the Ear Force X2 Wireless Xbox Headphones. The Ear Force X2 is a (mostly) wireless setup that works very nicely with your Xbox 360 console, providing high quality audio and voice chat in a audiophile quality package. And the X2 headphones deliver the goods for just under a hundred bucks, which makes them a natural choice. We can see why the MLG would license these as the \"official\" headphones of Major League Gaming.

Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators
game: Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators
review | 06/18/06 | Jason Perkins
Space Rangers 2: Rise of the Dominators receives a second review here at GamesFirst after impressing one of our editors enough to be compared to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. This strategy game from the Russian developer 1C brings the open-ended nature of Oblivion into space, dumping the player into an immense universe with tons of gameplay. Working your way through the steep learning curve might be difficult, but the variety of gameplay, quality of game experience, and budget price make it well worth the battle.

Retailers Brace for the PS3
news | 06/11/06 | Matt James
The PlayStation 2 launch was legendary for beginning the \"shortages\" craze. After last year\'s Xbox 360 launch, all gamers should now realize that if they want a new console system on launch day, it will be a fight. Nintendo looks to be shipping enough systems to satisfy demand, but this year we\'re concerned again about Sony. With some retailers refusing to take PlayStation 3 preorders, a confusing multi-configuration release offering, and a spotted history of delays and adjustments, PS3 is headed for a rocky launch. We have some details about what to expect on launch day here.

3D Realms Offered $500,000 to Release Duke Nukem by December 2006
game: Duke Nukem Forever
news | 06/10/06 | Aaron Stanton
Take Two Interactive renegotiated their contract with 3D Realms back in March, pulling two million dollars from the project at the same time as offering a $500,000 bonus if 3D Realms delivers by the end of the year. The $500,000 bonus is only paid if Duke Nukem Forever ships by December 31st, 2006. What does this mean for Duke Nukem? Well, it might get the title out the door. On the other hand, cutting money from the budget and then leaning on the developer to finish faster isn\'t exactly a formula for a quality game. A bonus might sound like a good idea, unless it leads to rushed development with lower standards.

Featuring the Xboard \"boarding game\" controller, a funky exercise bike controller, and both baseball an golf simulators, Qmotions lineup is looking good. And the best part is, these devices are coming in at realistic prices, which, our friend Monica believes, should open up these possibilities to more mainstream gamers.

The PS3 Afterthought: Hands on with Warhawk
game: Warhawk
preview | 05/20/06 | Jeremy Kauffman
Overall, Sony\'s PlayStation 3 area was pathetic (and less crowded than we\'ve ever seen at the Sony booth since 1999). Other than anti-aliasing issues, wonky early builds, and (at best) 360-quality graphics, there wasn\'t much to talk about. Except one thing: Sony did surprise everyone by announcing a me-too technology that adds tilt-sensitivity to the PS3 controller. How did that work out? Well, Jeremy took some time with the showcase title for the new tilt-controls, Warhawk, a flight combat game that shows how any new control element, no matter how small, can make a moderate game kind of sort of fun. Trimersion: The Next Phase in VR HMDs
feature | 05/18/06 | Monica Hafer
Head-mounted displays (HMDs) are controversial devices: On the one hand, they fill your complete field of vision with generated graphics, creating an absolutely immersive experience. On the other hand, you cannot turn away from an HMD, and many folks feel claustrophobic or motion-sick using the devices. On the third hand, hired models in shiny silver outfits with laser guns and futuristic virtual reality helmets are so cool-looking that we just have to stop and check them out. Monica checks in on the development of the Trimersion HMD system, compatible with game consoles and PCs. Get the full details here.

Live Anywhere Developer: Xbox 360 Controller Beats the Keyboard and Mouse
game: Shadowrun
feature | 05/18/06 | Aaron Stanton
When you put a keyboard and mouse against a console controller, most people would say that the keyboard and mouse would win. However, most people would be wrong. With the introduction of Live Anywhere, a service that will put Xbox 360 players against PC users in the same games, the game industry has found a new perspective on the old debate. After a few minutes with one of the Shadowrun developers, it became clear that their main problem was not making the 360 controller competitive with the PC, but keeping the PC from getting owned by the Xbox 360. Even against experienced Halo and Counterstrike players, fairly average Xbox players seemed to have an advantage on the battlefield. Sometimes, reality is surprising.

preview | 05/15/06 | Chris Martin
Microsoft\'s 500 lbs gorilla this Fall is Gears of War. Not only did Gears manage to rip the GamesFirst! The Future of Xbox Live Arcade: Anywhere Means Mobile
game: Xbox Live
feature | 05/14/06 | Shawn Rider
Xbox Live Anywhere is propelling Microsoft\'s multiplayer gaming community into a whole new realm, bringing it cross-platform in all sorts of cool ways. One of the major new features of the Anywhere service will be a much expanded Xbox Live Arcade, which will offer games on almost every mobile phone and PDA platform. Bringing the reliability, not to mention the try-before-you-buy mentality, of Xbox Live to the mobile gaming experience could be just the thing to get us to take cell phones seriously as a gaming platform. E3 hands on: Battlefield 2142
game: Battlefield 2142
preview | 05/13/06 | Blaine Krumpe
EA showed off the latest addition to the Battlefield Franchise: Battlefield 2142. This installment adds a little sci-fi flair to the action, but remains true to the roots of the series in its realism and excellent online multiplayer support. We just wish it had some kind of interesting storyline, since the futuristic setting easily allows for the most imaginative (or at least slightly clever) premise of all the Battlefield games. Still, Blaine says we\'ll be able to get over the plot and focus on the action, which is oh-so-sweet. Get the in-depth hands-on preview here.

Protesting Booth Babes Kicked Out By E3 Security
news | 05/11/06 | Aaron Stanton
Booth babes have been a hot topic at E3 this year. The ESA has instigated additional enforcement policies to help control the extent to which booth babes reveal their bodies, and not everyone is happy about that. When two girls in revealing clothing showed up outside the convention center with signs that read, \"Booth Babe Protest: I\'m \"E\" for Everyone,\" and, \"Bikinis > Bullets,\" we couldn\'t help but stop for an interview. When E3 security showed up to chase them off the grounds, we also couldn\'t help but throw a press credential, a camera, and a little weight into the mix in an attempt to put it to The Man. Seems to have worked.
