game: E3 2005: Kameo: Elements of Power

One of the Xbox 360 titles that Microsoft was demonstrating at this year's E3 was Kameo: Elements of Power. Originally announced for the GameCube, then the Xbox, and finally settling on the Xbox 360 as an exclusive, this massive adventure title will help launch the new system. With huge battles involving thousands of enemy A.I. and a style that looks to target the Zelda-fan demographic, Kameo is one to watch. Check out our E3 2005 preview.
game: Conker: Live & Reloaded

The trash-talkin', poo-whompin', Tediz slaughterin' squirrel is back. Conker: Live and Reloaded is the Xbox update of one of the best platformers for the N64. And although we loved the game on the N64, it's a little hard to imagine Rare spending the time to bring the same game out again on the Xbox. So let's take a hands-on look at the game with our man, Chris, to see just what we can expect, and get a better idea if this game should elicit a big sigh, or a big squeal.

GBA players have reason to smile: Max Payne is that rare sort of GBA game that manages to deliver the fun, style, and feel of its console counterpart. The wizards at Rare are easily one of the most beloved development studios around. Long the secret behind some of Nintendo's best games, Rare has a new home and they're starting to get their Xbox groove on. Grabbed by the Ghoulies is a bit too simple to be a hit for those looking for the Perfect Dark experience, but it will probably fare better with the kiddies and will no doubt find its way into a stocking or two. Everything old is new again. That seems to be the motto of late, and that's not always a bad thing, but it is a risky venture. Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, is the latest offering in the stellar N64 series of Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooiethis time on the GBA. Microsoft\'s latest space epic is called Freelancer, and it\'s a ton of fun. Featuring a gigantic universe for you to explore, this game puts you in the role of a freelance trader and mercenary. The Evolvers: A well selected name for what could constitute an entirely new perspective on massively multiplayer gaming. For years there have been videogames that have attempted to mimic the look and feel of Hollywood: vampire slayers, star trekkers, bounty hunters slews of voice actors trying to mimic other people in the name of a good videogame. It's amazing how rarely they succeed. Similarly, there are times when storylines built with the controls of a console or played out on the screen of the PC are used to produce a feature film. Resident Evil. Final Fantasy.

Signed, sealed, and delivered, Microsoft has confirmed today that they have purchased mega-hit software developers, Rare, Ltd. Rare will create titles exclusive to the Xbox, including a sequel to Perfect Dark, which we are all very happy about. The first Rare title to hit the Xbox will be Kameo, due Spring 2003. While Nintendo has made it official that they have gotten rid of their 49% share in Rare, LTD, creators of Donkey Kong, Perfect Dark, Star Fox, etc., Microsoft has yet to confirm details stated by Nintendo of America that MS has scooped up the London-based development house. This is big news and means franchises like Perfect Dark and Conker may find a home on the Xbox. Click for more.

While there were many points of interest at E3 this year, the most consistently really crowded booth was Nintendo's, where gamers flocked, nay swarmed, to see the GameCube. For those skeptics out there who think the general mediocrity of the N64 experience has soured gamers, witness the intense interest shown for the new system. Let's face it, the N64 has suffered from a general lack of titles, and some companies have released really terrible games for it, further causing pain to gamers who have been forced to pursue the "any port in a storm" strategy (Big Mountain 2000 comes to mind, er, flashes painfully across my memory). However, there have been some very good titles, and it's no mistake that the best titles on the system have been made by Nintendo and it's 2nd party developer, Rare. Nintendo is, in many ways, the Disney of the gaming world they have created and continue to create incredibly popular and lasting characters, who appear in all sorts of games and have firmly lodged themselves in the hearts of mainstream USA (as well as mainstream everywhere else).
